My guess is that it doesn’t know how to handle something in the partition because the recovery process has to interrupt the normal boot of the computer (which would normally be handled by the BIOS). I had to reMOUNT (either it's a "right-click" or a button) the partition from Disk Utility and then Repair the partition.
